MAJOR EVENTS:

  • Presidential Elections – July 2007
    Pratibha Patil

    Pratibha Patil and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat were the candidates for the position of first citizen of the nation from United Progressive Alliance and unofficial support of National Democratic Alliance respectively. The 13th presidential elections were held on July 19, 2007, where Pratibha Patil won with 6,38,116 votes over Bhairon Singh Shekhawat who got 3,31,306 votes. So, Patil became the first 'Woman President' of the Indian Republic.
  • Vice – Presidential elections – August 2007
    Elections for the second-highest ranking government official in the executive branch of the Government of India were held on August 10, in which former National Commission for Minority chairman, Hamid Ansari, won with 445 votes, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament, Najma Heptulla and UNPA candidate Rashid Mashood who got 222 and 75 votes respectively.

STATE ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS – 2007:

  • Narendra Modi
    Gujarat State Assembly elections – December 2007
    The western state saw most happening elections of the year on 182 assembly constituency seats, where 3,66,39,686 electors casted their votes for 1268 candidates on November 15 and 21. After a tedious tug-of-war, Narendra Modi came back to power for third time, as Bhartiya Janata Party won 117 seats, though with loss of 10 seats as compared to 2002, while Congress could just reach a mark 59, with a gain of 11 seats.
  • Punjab State Assembly elections – February 2007
    Shiromani Akali Dal coalition government won assembly elections with 44 out of 117 electoral seats on which total 1468 candidates sought mandate on February 13. Prakash Singh Badal took over the charge defeating Captain Amarinder Singh. Two major national political parties Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party got 32 and 19 seats respectively.
  • Uttrakhand State Assembly elections – February 2007
    Bhartiya Janata Party egressed as the largest party with 34 seats in a house of 70 on February 21. But, it could not reach enough majority to form a government. After much haggling it was announced that the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and the three independents would be supporting the government. The incumbent Indian National Congress Government lost as they had only 21 seats. After prolonged, B C Khanduri became the chief minister of Uttrakhand.
  • Manipur State Assembly elections – February 2007
    This North-Eastern state went on polls in three phases on February 8, 14 and 23. During the elections, 368 candidates fought on 56 electoral seats and Indian National Congress emerged victorious with a simple majority. A Congress-led coalition government was sworn in on 01 March 2007 with Okram Ibobi Singh as the Chief Minister.
  • Uttar Pradesh State Assembly elections – April-May 2007
    With population of around 16.6 crore people, Uttar Pradesh can equate countries like France and Germany in size. There are 113 million voters in the state and 403 electoral seats, out of which election in 2007 were held on 402 seats at 10 thousand polling stations, in which more than 46 percent electorate casted their votes. A total of 129 parties fielded 2,487 candidates, while 2020 candidates stood as independents. Seven phase of election campaigning was carried from April 7 to May 8. After the elections Bahujan Samaj Party emerged victorious with 206 seats, and formed government in state under the leadership of Mayawati.
  • Goa State Assembly elections – June 2007
    This small coastal state in South-West of India saw 75 candidates seeking mandate from 40 electoral seats on June 2. There are 10,10,577 electors who casted their votes from 1071 polling stations. Congress won the elections with 16 seats, whereas Bhartiya Janata Party just lagged by two seats to victory.
  • Himachal Pradesh State Assembly elections – November-December 2007
    Results are still awaited in Himachal that went on polls in two phases on November 14 and December 19. There are 4604443 voters who will vote for 336 contestants on 6244 polling stations. Counting of votes in the state will take place on December 28.
